How do you find the words to describe someone who was such a master with words? It is very hard. Kate Adams was such a presence. She will always be remembered as incredibly intelligent, funny(!!), and just so completely dedicated to being the best that she could be with whatever tasks she had committed to…and there were many!
Kate was one of the founding members of SURJ Santa Maria. She was a member that I think many of us would count on to put things into perspective, put our ramblings into coherent sentences, and in so doing, manage to bring us together. She lived her beliefs and ideals and she fought hard against injustices. It deeply saddens all of us to know she will no longer be a part of SURJ or a part of our lives. She gave so much and did it so willingly, and because of that, she will be sorely missed by SURJ, the community, and everyone who knew her.
To quote an excerpt from a poem by Jane Mead that she recently shared, “Whenever the experiment on and of my life begins to draw to a close, I’ll go back to the place that held me and be held. It’s O.K. I think I did what I could. I think I sang some, I think I held my hand out.”
Kate, you did so much more. Thank you Kate.
SURJ’s role is to undermine white support for white supremacy and to help build a racially just society. That work cannot be done in isolation from, or disconnected from, the powerful leadership of communities of color.
SURJ believes in resourcing organizing led by people of color, and maintaining strong accountability relationships with organizers and communities of color as the central part of our Theory of Change. In order to activate this Theory of Change, we employ three core strategies:
- Delegitimize racist institutions
- Fight for a fair economy that refuses to pit communities against each other
- Shift culture (meaning the underlying beliefs folks have about people and the world) in a way that undermines support for white supremacy
We appreciate your interest in SURJ. Your donations will help us to Stand Up for Racial Justice.
